About Me

I’m 29, I live in Georgia (the state, not the country), and I owe just over $77k in student loans.  In 2011, I paid off my undergraduate loans. It was a proud moment, but it taught me that life is about more than writing monthly checks. I’m still working to make the minimum payments each month on my graduate loans, but trying to focus more on the life that the decisions behind the loans have given me and less on the price tag.

Most of my posts revolve around life, money, and the occasional absurdness of both. I have a degree in psychology and another in public health policy, which really just means that I spend far too much time inside my own head. I’ve fallen into two jobs (one full time, one not) which only add fuel to the absurdity fire, but in the best way possible. I also have a part-time retail job that is all absurdity all the time.

Your post leaves me so encouraged. I have a large debt to pay off quickly too, which will also require some sacrifice. You are young and have your whole life ahead of you . Getting this debt out of the way early is a very commendable thing to do. Along the way, try to treat yourself every now and then. I wish you the best of luck achieving your goals.

We’re paying off a total of $120,000 in student loan debt in the next five years. Your blog is inspiring! Thanks so much for sharing.

Thanks! Best of luck with your loan payoff. Each payment feels like a small victory in itself, doesn’t it?

is it really warm in Georgia tonight?

It’s Georgia in May, so it’s really warm all of the time. It’s going to be a miserably hot summer- the kind that makes me miss living in Maine.

If you lived there 23 years ago, then yes. I lived on the Navy base in Brunswick for two years.

I think this is a really important blog to be doing! Things seem to be looking worse and worse for Sallie Mae as the term of the loan doesn’t match that of the underlying asset. It appears that your goal is to reconcile that by accelerating you payments. God bless you, and thank you for writing about it.

My loans aren’t actually through Sallie Mae (Nelnet and Dept of Education), but I think all the lenders are facing increased scrutiny both from the borrowers and from the general public. My goal is to get rid of my undergrad loans this year so that I can focus on my grad loans. I just do not want to end up paying on loans for twenty years. Thanks for your kind comment!
